Read all about what legendary eventer Lucinda Green has been up to this month.

This month I enjoyed two wonderful events - the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, with the international crème-de-la crème all under one roof, and Dublin Horse Show, where passion for horses is everywhere and there’s a class for everyone. At the latter I was honoured to judge the four- and five-year-old ridden eventers, but at both, it was fascinating to see quality showjumpers and eventers side-by side, emphasising what different animals they have become.

Next, it was off to a warm evening race meeting at Sandown and a very wet Bath to continue my steward training. In particular, it was fascinating to see how watertight drug testing is. There seems to be little doubt over whether drugs are present but proving intent or accident is another thing, as we’ve seen in both racing and eventing recently. If a supplement is used it seems sensible to choose one that is properly tested and comes with a guarantee - but beyond that, as owners we should all consider whether we need to put anything into our horses. Supplements are often seen as an easy fix, and even used in multiples, yet there can be a complicated cascade of effects within the body - with potentially negative consequences to horse, as well as rider.

Finally, Lissa found a horse for sale she liked - after her appalling run of bad luck I took a plunge into the red and bought him, as he seems genuine and sound. He’s a small 12-year-old Advanced eventer - they’ll start in an Open Novice and then some Intermediates. Now all I have to do is recoup the money - so far one leg is sold...
