Monthly diary — March 2014

Lucinda Green

Read all about what legendary eventer Lucinda Green has been up to this month.

The month began visiting the Austrian team who are coming on well – a couple may be ready for the World Equestrian Games. Eight consecutive days of Petplan clinics followed, a different venue each time. The clinics have been attracting more combinations who are just starting out in eventing which is only to be encouraged.

However, I’m also keen to ensure that combinations just making the move into Novice and 1* have plenty of support as they face a steeper learning curve with ever-decreasing room for error. From next year I hope to return to the two-day clinic format so there’s more time to deal with problems. Training at all levels is vital, if we want eventing to remain a three-phase sport, by preventing the continuing dumbing down of cross-country, which ultimately could turn it into Combined Training.

Next came Cheltenham and I managed to watch one day live and the others on TV – fabulous. Then I had my first taste of racing behind the scenes at a wet and windy evening meeting at Kempton. Friend and former team mate Ian Stark, now an experienced racing steward and disciplinary panel member, has put me forward as a potential steward. There are not many openings so now I wait until the summer to see if I’ve been selected.

That night I headed to Norfolk to see Lissa compete the following day at Great Witchingham on her new ride Skorpio. They achieved the 1* qualification they were chasing and in so doing found cross-country courses from 90cm to Intermediate that were original and like they used to be - barely a roll top or log in sight... well worth my late night drive and a few hours’ sleep in the car.
