Lucinda Green

Read all about what legendary eventer Lucinda Green has been up to this month.

Lissa’s assessment of HQ has turned out to be spot on. While the mare excels across country, she is miserable in the school. She can’t wait to get going hacking round the fields over fences, but she coils and leaps if she’s asked to do flatwork. I was hoping to conjure her into enjoying it all but, realistically, I won't - even if I had more time at my disposal. So, sadly I think we will part ways with HQ returning to the hunting field she loves... while I’ll wait to see what other horse opportunities cross my path.

Meanwhile the 2015 Petplan Masterclasses began at Littleton Manor, near Reigate. Petplan’s marketing boss Isabella von Mesterhàzy came along with her lovely young horse. Despite a very wet start underfoot, everyone was game and coped well, and the going improved rapidly through the day. Next it was Norton Disney where we had great fun too - it was lovely to hear afterwards how well some of the attendees did in the following weekend's event. Our next clinic sadly was cancelled due to waterlogging, so I accompanied Lissa cross-country schooling her horses at Boomerang instead. She’s been working on lightening Ali’s forehand and he’s certainly carrying himself better. Raffa continues to be fantastic and Daisy may have decided that cross-country is fun after all - she stood off and flew a Trakehner rather than crawling under it…

Tip of the month:
Feel it, don’t think it - as you ride to a fence avoid anticipating too much what is going to happen. Once fixated on a likely course of events, it's easy to forget to feel what is actually happening and therefore you can fail to react appropriately.
