Following qualification at Field House Equestrian in Northallerton, 17-year-old Anna Tomlinson from Uttoxeter in Staffordshire has won the Petplan Equine Preliminary Championship of the Petplan Equine Area Festival Finals on Moreorless. These prestigious grassroots championships were held alongside the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire from 15th – 19th April 2015.

Riding Moreorless, a 10 year-old Palomino Gelding owned by Anna herself, Anna Tomlinson impressed the judges who awarded the combination a winning score of 72.73% in the Petplan Equine Preliminary Championship from among 51 horse and rider combinations.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, to be honest, but it’s amazing!” exclaimed Anna. “I’d like to say that I didn’t have any expectations – but I was secretly hoping for a top ten position, so I was really pleased with my result.”

“The first test in the morning was alright, it could have definitely gone better but I learnt a lot from it and applied that to the second test, which went much, much better” she added. “He was more uphill, which is something he can sometimes struggle with and I was really pleased with how he coped with the surroundings and atmosphere.”

Primarily an eventer competing pre-novice, Anna uses dressage and her training with Jane Critchley to improve all aspects, not just those in between the white boards, “I think it’s really important to work on your dressage – I couldn’t event without it” claimed Anna. As for the future, the winning duo is beginning work on elementary movements with the hopes of competing at the level later in the year.

Now in their 16th year, the Petplan Equine Area Festivals give riders across the levels from Prelim to Intermediate I the chance to experience the thrill of competing in true championship conditions, in a relaxed and friendly environment. More than 3,680 (an increase of 32% on last year’s series) grassroots dressage riders from all over the UK competed at 19 Petplan Equine Area Festivals across the country from July to November 2014, for a chance to qualify and compete for one of the coveted titles.

British Dressage’s Chief Executive Jason Brautigam said: “Since taking up the reins at British Dressage, I have been impressed with the success and popularity of the Petplan Equine Area Festivals series, which is most definitely one of the jewels in our calendar. Thanks to Petplan Equine’s on-going support of these championships, which goes above and beyond their sponsorship contribution, the series has seen a staggering 32% increase in participation year on year and next year we are adding a further three venues to the series.”
